Chicken Dhansak


Hello, my latest recipe is for one of my favourites – Chicken Dhansak. I absolutely love Indian food. So be prepared for a few more recipes like this appearing. While it is always my first choice of takeaway, I also enjoying making curry at home.

Dhansak is a beautiful mild curry made with chicken, lentils and vegetables. I think traditionally it is made with mutton or goat but I went with chicken.

As with all of my recipes you can customise this. Feel free to add in additional vegetables. You can also swap the chicken with either prawns or extra vegetables/

Chicken Dhansak is a beautiful mild curry made with red lentils and vegetables. Perfect served with pilau rice and your favourite sides.



  1. Fry the onion and chicken in the olive oil for 10 minutes

  2. Add the vinegar and sugar and cook for another couple minutes

  3. Stir in the garlic, ginger, turmeric, ground cumin, chilli powder, cinnamon, ground fennel seeds, cardamom and coriander seeds

  4. Cook for a couple of minutes

  5. Stir in the lentils, tomatoes and season with salt and pepper

  6. Pour in the water, cover and cook for 35 minutes

  7. Stir in the lemon juice and fresh coriander

  8. Serve with some natural yoghurt, pilau rice and poppadoms
